“I was shocked by something a security guard did when my guide dog went through airport security.”
For me, traveling is usually a little difficult. My devoted companion and helper, my guide dog, is always by my side because I am blind. He is more than simply a dog; he is also my eyes, my composure, and my assurance while traveling.
We went up to the security checkpoint that day. Since not all employees are trained to treat guide dogs appropriately, I was previously aware that this section could be tense. I was stunned by what one of the airport security guards did when he approached us.
You can evaluate the officer’s actions for yourself once I tell you the entire tale.
However, everything happened very differently this time.
A Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agent came up to us in a polite manner.
With composure, he clarified that he would now perform a routine screening for my dog and me. I stiffened a little—what if the dog became frightened?
But my anxieties were allayed by what transpired next.
As like he knew precisely how to do it, the officer rubbed his hand softly over my dog’s body.
My dog stood peacefully, as though he understood it was merely a formality, and he talked softly and without making any abrupt motions.
I briefly even grinned because, like me, my dog had cleared the TSA inspection.
Some people may find this scene—a dog receiving a “pat down”—funny.
However, I saw it as an indication of genuine professionalism and deference. Because applying the rules with humanity is more important than simply following them.
I’ve been gratefully thinking of that officer ever since. He went above and beyond the call of duty.
He demonstrated that when you’re with people who appreciate and recognize your individuality, traveling can be safe.
