The Day an Octopus Saved a Diver’s Life

Some encounters in the ocean change you forever.

At Hanauma Bay on Oʻahu, just after sunrise on September 12, 2023, diver Mateo Cruz slipped beneath the surface for what should have been a routine reef survey. Locals reassured him that sharks in those waters were rare. The water was calm, the reef vibrant, and Mateo drifted easy, notebook in hand.

But the ocean always keeps its own secrets.

From the blue, a gray torpedo appeared—a lone shark, cutting straight toward him. The first pass missed, but the intent was clear. Mateo’s breath quickened. The shark circled tighter, preparing for another charge.

As it surged in for the second attack, something extraordinary happened.

The reef itself seemed to move, twitching to life. A rust-red octopus exploded from the rocks and launched onto the shark’s face, its arms wrapping around the predator’s eyes. In an instant, chaos filled the water—a flurry of limbs, cloud, and confusion. Disoriented, the shark veered off and vanished into the deep.

Mateo floated, heart pounding, breath rattling in his mask. He was alive—because of an octopus.

Since that day, Mateo’s relationship with the ocean changed. The octopus wasn’t just another reef creature—it became his favorite animal. He even made himself a vow: he would never eat octopus again.

Because once, when it mattered most, one of them had chosen to save him.
