In Valencia, Spain, shoppers recently found themselves caught in what looked more like a comedy sketch than a grocery run. Out of nowhere, a monkey stormed into the produce aisle—eyes locked on the prize—and began tearing into bunches of bananas like a true professional.
The Great Banana Heist
The escapee, it turned out, wasn’t some random city monkey. He was a resident of Bioparc Valencia Zoo, a place he had called home for years. Zookeepers later admitted that bananas had always been his favorite indulgence, but after budget cuts, the fruit was taken off the menu.
Apparently, that didn’t sit well with him.
Investigators now believe the monkey had been planning his escape. Reports say he cleverly swiped a set of keys from a distracted zookeeper, unlocked his enclosure, and marched out like it was just another day. His destination? Straight into town—directly to the nearest grocery store.
Monkey Business at the Checkout
When zoo staff and animal control finally tracked him down, the sight that greeted them was pure comedy. There he was, perched at the cashier’s counter, handful of bananas in tow, sitting calmly as if waiting for someone to pay his bill.
One shopper told reporters:
“He wasn’t scared at all. He looked like he belonged there, just another customer waiting to check out.”
What Happens Next?
Thankfully, no one was hurt, and the monkey has since been returned safely to Bioparc. But zookeepers now admit they have a new challenge on their hands: how to keep him happy enough to avoid plotting another daring getaway.
Bananas, it seems, may have to make their way back onto the menu. After all, as this monkey showed the world, some cravings are powerful enough to break through cages, cross a city, and end up at a checkout line.
Sometimes, a banana is worth it. 🍌
