She was just a little girl, standing on the shore, crying out,
“I can’t swim — please, someone save my dog!”
Her dog, Bella, had chased a ball too far into the waves. The water turned rough, dragging Bella under, and the girl froze in fear. Her older sister stood beside her, but she couldn’t swim either. People around just watched.
Then, out of nowhere, a man named David — someone homeless, someone she had seen near the boardwalk before — dropped his worn backpack in the sand and ran straight into the sea.

Without hesitation, he fought the waves until he reached Bella. Gently, he lifted her head above the water and saved her

Bella clung to him until they made it back to the shore. She shook herself off, safe again. The little girl’s eyes filled with tears. When she tried to thank him, David just smiled and walked away.
To her, David will never just be a stranger. He’ll always be Bella’s guardian angel.
