It was a completely ordinary night. My wife and I were sleeping in our room, comfortably tucked under the blanket. Our six-year-old son and one-year-old daughter had long since fallen asleep in their rooms. Quiet, peaceful — nothing seemed out of the ordinary.
The clock showed about three in the morning when our Labrador, Semi, suddenly rushed into the bedroom. He had been with us for eight years — a smart, affectionate dog, a true member of the family. He never caused any trouble and always knew how to behave in the house. But tonight, he was different.
Semi rushed to the side of my wife’s bed, placed his paws on her chest, and began quietly barking. This behavior immediately put me on alert. My wife and I had strictly forbidden him from jumping on the bed, and he always understood that. But now, he was acting strangely and frighteningly.
I suddenly woke up, my heart racing — in the dim light, I saw the dog looming over my wife. For a split second, panic gripped me: what was happening? But then I suddenly realized what was going on and quickly dialed the emergency services number.
I heard a strange creak in the hallway and almost inaudible movement, and I realized — the issue was not with the dog at all.
Semi stood between us and the door — as if he knew where the threat was coming from.
I immediately woke my wife, gestured for her to stay quiet, and silently approached the door. I heard another sound — someone was quietly shuffling their feet on the parquet.
I quickly grabbed my phone and called the police. While the patrol was on its way, we hid with the children in the bathroom — Semi stood on guard by the door the whole time.
Seven minutes later — an eternity in that situation — we heard someone shout from outside:
“Police! Everyone stay where you are!”
Two burglars were caught right in our house. It turned out they had entered through the living room window and were hoping to rob the house while everyone was asleep. But they hadn’t accounted for one thing — our dog.
Semi became a true hero. If it hadn’t been for him, who knows how it would have ended. We bought him a huge bone and the warmest blanket. Now, at night, he sleeps by the door to our bedroom. We don’t even argue about it.
He’s our true guardian.
